OCN Centre Focus: The Bytes Project

In this month's Centre Focus, we are thrilled to bring you insights from Stephen Dallas from The Bytes Project, as he responds to some questions about the OCN NI Certificate in Youth Work Practice qualification. Additionally, we have an exclusive quote from Jo Bailey, OCN Director of Business Development, highlighting the pivotal role that The Bytes Project plays in supporting learners throughout Northern Ireland.

Why is the OCN NI Certificate in Youth Work Practice important for youth service members?
The Level 2 Youth Work Certificate is a stepping stone towards excellence in youth work. It equips our members with vital skills and knowledge, including safeguarding training, understanding youth development stages, and communication strategies. As Stephen Dallas puts it, "This certificate provides a strong foundation for those interested in pursuing a career in youth work. At Bytes, we focus on improving the volunteer and staff pipeline, and access to training is key."

What specific activities and initiatives were undertaken during this week to support the registered members?
Throughout September, our dedicated group of learners embarked on a journey, covering unit one online. Their exploration of youth work values and principles was further enriched during a recent residential. Participants honed their communication skills, delved into safeguarding procedures, and learned to manage difficult situations through engaging activities like group discussions and role plays. They even had the opportunity to visit a local youth center. Participants are now busy developing personal action plans to apply their new found knowledge, with plans to dive into planning and evaluating programs in November.

What were some notable achievements or milestones reached during the week?
Our most significant achievement during the week was the successful recruitment of 20 individuals from 15 organizations for this cohort. What's more, through our Accord partnership with other youth groups, we were able to support 4 members of Youth Initiatives in joining the course, expanding the reach of this valuable training. Most participants have already completed the first six units with enthusiasm and dedication.

What are the future plans for continuing this support and furthering the development of youth workers?
The journey doesn't end here. The team at The Bytes Project has a vision to complete the program by March 2024, ensuring that learners have ample time to fully develop their skills and become adept youth workers. Last year, they successfully helped 3 graduates advance to the Level 4 qualification, with 2 even continuing their journey to the postgraduate level. This year, they aspire to further increase advancement opportunities through potential alumni support, expanded recruitment efforts, and exploration of additional funding opportunities.

How do you find offering OCN qualifications/courses?

We love the flexibility, affordability, and the recognised qualification provided through OCN. The range of units covered equips learners with well-rounded skills to kickstart their journey in the field of youth work. We're excited to continue offering these impactful courses.

And finally, a quote from Jo Bailey, the OCN Director of Business Development: "Working with The Bytes Project over the years has been instrumental in empowering learners across Northern Ireland. Their commitment to quality training and youth development plays a vital role in enhancing the lives of young people in our community. We are proud to have them as a partner in this transformative journey."
